The UK All-Party Parliamentary Group on West Papua has released a new statement on the pending sentencing of the seven West Papuan political prisoners for alleged involvement in anti-racism protests:
The All-Party Parliamentary Group on West Papua condemns in the strongest terms the attempt of the Indonesian public prosecutors to sentence seven leading West Papuan political prisoners to up to 17 years in prison. This move is an affront to basic principles of democracy and justice. At a time of global unrest against racism, the Indonesian authorities are attempting to lock away the victims of racist abuse. The perpetrators of this racist abuse, the Indonesian security services and nationalist groups that attacked a West Papuan student dorm in Surabaya in August 2019, have gone free. The seven political prisoners must be released immediately.
